South Carolina Teen Passes Out From Unknown Substance Found On School Bus

At least one teenage student in South Carolina lost consciousness on a school bus after being exposed to an unknown chemical substance.

Authorities confirmed that first responders were called to Indian Land High School in Lancaster County shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday (October 26) after receiving reports that multiple students were exposed to the unknown substance on a bus, per WCNC.

A 14-year-old female student reportedly lost consciousness at the scene while other students exhibited signs of exposure. While no student was transported by EMS for further treatment, the driver of the bus was take to a medical facility for evaluation by a family member. Everyone who experienced symptoms of exposure, including on EMS worker, are in stable condition but are monitoring their condition to make sure no other symptoms arise.

Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile said law enforcement is working to determine what the substance is and what led to the teen's exposure to the it.

"I want to assure parents that we are treating this matter seriously and will conduct a thorough investigation to determine what caused this exposure," said Faile. "We hope it was not the result of criminal activity, but we will go wherever the investigation leads us."

Once the investigation is complete, the school bus will be decontaminated.
