Suspect Identified in Florence, South Carolina Shooting

FLORENCE, S.C. - The suspect in the shooting of seven law enforcement officers in South Carolina has been identified as a Vietnam veteran and disbarred lawyer who has been charged several times in recent years, starting with a 2014 count of disorderly conduct.

Frederick Hopkins, 74, is accused of killing a 30-year veteran officer and injuring six others during a standoff in Florence Wednesday evening.

According to officials, the gunman is hospitalized with a head injury after falling at the scene and is unable to speak with officers.

Major Mike Nunn, with the Florence County Sheriff's Department, said officers were serving a warrant around 4 p.m. when a suspect began shooting, wounding three deputies.

City of Florence spokesman John Wukela said police officer Terrence Carraway, 52, who recently received his 30-year service pin, died of his injuries.

A candlelight vigil Thursday night is being arranged to honor the victims.
